English Competency Planning

Marcella L - UBC 2020

Planning Program: English Competency Planning

Marcella immigrated to Vancouver with her parents when she was in grade 9. Because her English proficiency was limited, she studied in an ELL class set up for immigrant students in a Vancouver public school. Marcella's parents very much hope that Marcella can quickly improve her English proficiency, get out of the ELL class, and become a normal student. However, they have not found a suitable and effective institution to help Marcella until they entered Multintel Education. Through the diagnostic evaluation of Multintel Education, it was found that Marcella's vocabulary, sentence formation, reading comprehension and writing skills are still at a low level. In English expressions, Chinese thinking is often used to translate and stack vocabulary. This phenomenon is very common among new immigrants and international students. Based on Marcella's situation, Dr. Liu, a language education expert, formulated a plan to help Marcella quickly establish a language mechanism from a multi-dimensional perspective. First, help Marcella expand her vocabulary, then improve her sentence skills to make Marcella's expressions more complex and diverse, and finally, systematically train Marcella's thinking and logic skills and teach her writing skills in a variety of styles. After less than a year of efficient training, Marcella successfully passed the ELL3 level and transitional stage, entering the same learning stage as local students. In the second half of grade 11, Marcella took the IELTS exam and got a score of 7.5 on the first try. Finally, after graduating from high school, Marcella was admitted to UBC, a top university in Canada!
